• The Case for a Rapid Home HIV Test

A rapid/oral HIV test for home use, currently under consideration by an FDA advisory committee, has the potential to reach a far greater number of individuals who want to know their HIV status on their own terms, writes Tom Donohue, founding director of the group Who’s Positive.

On May 15, the Blood Products Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will discuss whether to approve a take-home, oral HIV test that could revolutionize the way we think about testing. It has the potential to reach a far greater number of individuals who want to know their HIV status on their own terms.

This type of rapid, take-home test doesn’t come without debate between HIV testing counselors and those who support at-home testing. But in order to become the generation that ends HIV/AIDS, we must move forward and utilize new ways to empower people to know their status.

It’s important to note that an over-the-counter, oral/rapid home test is not replacing the conventional way we currently test for HIV. It’s simply an additional resource, an additional option. I know from traveling and listening to feedback that many people, including some who have chosen not to know their status using conventional methods, find it intrusive to discuss their sexual history with complete strangers (as an HIV-positive individual for nine years, I know firsthand how difficult that can be). An OTC test puts the power in the hands of the person wanting to know their status to decide where they will do this, who they will tell, and how they tell it.

Everyone acknowledges challenges with this type of test — including the awful scenario of an individual committing suicide after finding out a positive result. No one wants to lose a life, but there are resources available to help reduce this risk. I have been very open with the manufacturer of this test, OraSure Technologies, as well as the FDA, about my concerns about counseling, linkage to care, and partner notification, to name a few. I know that many advocates believe that in-person counseling should be required for HIV testing.

But this mentality is the very reason why many individuals simply don’t get tested. Why limit our options if someone wants to know their status? There will be trained professionals available via phone, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An individual never has to be identified if they choose not to be, but they will get the support and the linkage to care they need.

I have been following this project for seven years and have talked to thousands of people about this. As a result, I feel that now is the time to move forward with an OTC, rapid/oral test. If we want to become the generation that ends AIDS, we can’t withhold the tools and technology from those who need them.

TOM DONOHUE is the founding director of Who’s Positive, a national organization that humanizes HIV through firsthand accounts of people living with the virus. He also sits on the board of trustees of the National Association of People With AIDS. www.tomdonohue.org

  • Frank Ocean Says Coming Out Lifted a Boulder

Ocean says being closeted was a ‘boulder on my chest.’

Hip-hop star Frank Ocean says being closeted was a “boulder on my chest” and coming out was “about my own sanity” in an interview to be published Saturday by London’s Guardian.

In the interview, which will be in the paper’s Guide section tomorrow, Ocean addresses the need for gay role models: “I wished at 13 there was somebody I looked up to who would have said something like that, who would have been transparent in that way.”

He also says he doesn’t see coming out as particularly risky. “Sure, evil exists, extremism exists,” he says. “Somebody could commit a hate crime and hurt me. But they could do the same just because I’m black. They could do the same just because I’m American.”

Ocean, a member of the group Odd Future, came out in a Tumblr post early this month. His first major-label solo album, Channel Orange, has just been released and has been well received by critics and the public.

  • Condom Slips Out Of Zac Efron’s Pocket At Movie Premiere

    Zac Efron
No glove, no love Zac! Well at least we know he is having protected sex! Muscle-twink and former High School Musical star Zac Effron was at the premier of The Lorax, a children’s movie based on the Dr. Seuss book, when he went to hand something to his publicist and a condom slipped out of his pocket.

As you can see in the video below, Zac gets all in a huff about this slip up. Don’t worry Zac, we are glad that you are making good life choices. Maybe you can have a chat with Justin Bieber who was in a highly publicized pregnancy scandal a few months ago.

How exciting for Zac, the wrapper in question is a Trojan Magnum XL. Apparently Zac is packing some serious heat. We kinda already had an idea after we saw these questionable naked pictures of Mr. Efron last year.

Some people are speculating that the incident was staged. What do you think? Do you think less of Zac for practicing safe sex?

  • Condoms Are Getting A ‘Quick Application’ Makeover

sensis, condoms, quickstrips r. beau thompsonCondoms, they are a changin’. Florida-based Grove Medical LLC thinks putting on a condom just takes too damn long. The company is hoping that you agree as they roll out their newest creation, Sensis Condoms with QuickStrips.

Our first impression is that these condoms sound more like teeth-whitening products, but we’re willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

    R. Beau Thompson patented Sensis’ (Sensi? Senei? Sensisesese’s’ses’?) application strips after a particularly frustrating bout of what we can only imagine is condom-induced boner fail, though he prefers to call it a “frustrating interlude with a female sexual partner.” Same thing, bro. While Thompson himself is straight, he’s marketing his product to the gays – a $250 million market.

“I think some of the research and anecdotal information I have heard about shows that, outside of condoms not being available at the moment of having sex, sometimes it becomes difficult to negotiate for a variety of reasons, whether because of drug taking or just lack of skill in putting it on,” said Ernest Hopkins, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation’s legislative director.

It is a problem health officials have had to contend with in promoting the “condom code.” Without a cure for AIDS or an effective HIV vaccine, the best weapon of choice in the fight against AIDS remains a simple see-through piece of latex.

With condoms the best defense against a multitude of STDs, they are likely here to stay for the foreseeable future.

“You will always need some sort of sheet, always need some sort of physical barrier,” said Thompson. “We are trying to make a difference and to make the experience better so you don’t interrupt the moment when putting on a condom.”

QuickStrips are pretty much the biggest change to happen to condoms since we stopped making them out of animal guts. We’re going to have to see these QuickStrips before making a final judgement on the subject. Do people really have that much trouble putting on condoms? This is news to us.

Any volunteers for some field research?

  • Lonely and Alive at the AIDS/LifeCycle

Posted by Nick Vivion on Jun 7, 2011 in Gay Travel | 2 comments

Somewhere between San Francisco and Los Angeles is a pack of 3,200 bicyclists, roadies and volunteers  - as well as a group of embedded journalists who are covering the madness.

gay blog, gay news, gay culture Day 2 at the AIDS/LifeCycle Ride

Somewhere amidst this madness is me, Nick Vivion, your esteemed Unicorn Booty representative and do-gooder. I’m here capturing the stories and the passions that drive this group of people to spend a week biking 575 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

And even though there is an incredible energy emanating from the over 3,000 people here, I feel strangely alone. I miss my significant other, Kevin, who is my partner in crime through thick and thin. I wish he was here experiencing this with me, and helping me capture the beauty in these moments.

Mostly, though, this inherent loneliness has brought the continuing AIDS epidemic into stark relief. This past Sunday was the 30th anniversary of the first AIDS case, and HIV/AIDS remains a visible worldwide plague – especially for the gay community.

Shockingly, a recent CDC study found that 20% of gay men in America are HIV-positive – and nearly HALF do not even know it!

My loneliness without Kevin – the feeling of pain of not having him close – is nothing compared to the stories of pain and death shared with many who are on the AIDS/LifeCycle ride. I am lucky to have Kevin around, and yet many people in our community have lost loved ones to this very-preventable disease.

I’m going to be capturing video stories, compiling blogs about life on the road, and generally getting you excited about the potential amazeballs experience that awaits you next year on AIDS/LifeCycle 11 – it truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! You can see all of the content created by the Press Corps on the AIDS/LifeCycle site.

Remember, “Always wear a condom,” skywrites the panties as they fly through the air.

Which is your favorite of the three commercials?

Since we’re already talking about safe sex today, and the necessity for education on the subject, we figured it was time to post this racy little gem we stumbled across this week.

It means that they don’t take drugs and are free of any diseases, i suppose sexually transmitted diseases would be included. Could be Syphilis or Gonorrhea free too if sexual.
